« Lorsque je ne porte pas mes orthèses, je me sens handicapée », déclare Mause-Darline Francois, en fixant ses membres inférieurs. Mause-Darline est née avec une déficience physique : elle n’a pas assez de force dans ses jambes pour supporter le poids de son corps. Ainsi, depuis son enfance, elle porte deux orthèses -un appareillage qui, dans son cas, compense une fonction déficitaire- lui permettant de marcher, et lui garantissant donc son indépendance de mouvement.

Edy Silfa a été enseveli durant deux jours sous les décombres de son atelier de réparation de voiture après le tremblement de terre de janvier 2010, qui a mutilé sa jambe et détruit sa vie. Il réapprend à marcher au centre de réadaptation physique de Port-au-Prince. Silfa bénéficie ainsi de l'un des programmes de réhabilitation du CICR actuellement en cours dans plus de 30 pays à travers le monde.

Edy Silfa was trapped in the rubble of his car repair workshop for two days after the January 2010 earthquake, which mangled his leg and destroyed his livelihood. He is currently learning to walk again at the Port-au-Prince physical rehabilitation centre. Silfa is taking part of one of the rehabilitation programmes that the ICRC is currently running in some 30 countries around the world.

Two years after an earthquake devastated Haiti on 12 January 2010, reconstruction is finally making progress there. The ICRC is working with the authorities to improve the living conditions of detainees and to rebuild a large limb-fitting and rehabilitation centre. Read on for the latest update on our activities in Haiti.

Between September and December 2011, the ICRC carried out 24 visits to 14 prisons and police stations to ensure that detainees were being treated humanely and with dignity, in accordance with international rules and standards.

Since the violent earthquake hit Haiti on 12 January 2010, the ICRC has registered 146 children who became separated from their families. So far, it has reunited 59 of them with their families and found the relatives of 21 others. Each case involved lengthy and meticulous research, complicated administrative procedures, much travel and, above all, constant efforts to ensure respect for the children's rights.

Port-au-Prince (ICRC) - Over the next twelve months, the ICRC Special Fund for the Disabled (SFD), with financial support from the American Red Cross and the Norwegian Red Cross, will rebuild and re-equip - and later help to maintain - one of the most important physical rehabilitation facilities in Haiti, which is managed by Healing Hands for Haiti International (HHHI). This will benefit thousands of disabled people in the country.

The clinic is due to re-open by the end of 2011.

So that the amputees can be independent, they have to attend rehabilitation sessions, and child amputees, in particular, have to have their prostheses changed every so often. Wednesday, October 20, 2010 - Mirebalais, Haiti - Benjamin Sergot worked as a schoolteacher in Haiti's capital city, Port-au-Prince, before a devastating earthquake turned his world upside down last January 12th. Within moments, his home was destroyed and the school where he worked was turned to rubble. Port-au-Prince (ICRC) - The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has just finished rebuilding and refurbishing the civilian prison in Jacmel, one of the cities hardest hit by the earthquake that struck Haiti on 12 January 2010.

In the early morning hours of 11 June 2010 inter_ethnic tensions started in the south of Kyrgyzstan. Hundreds of people were killed, over a thousand - wounded, many houses were burned down and looted. The Kyrgyz authorities acknow_ ledged the deaths of almost 900 people in the clashes. About a hundred thousand people fled the violence to neighbouring Uzbekistan.
