ROME, November 11, 2009 - The World Bank and the Italian Civil Protection Department (CPD) signed today a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to join efforts towards advancing the agenda of disaster risk reduction, sustainable recovery, and reconstruction in disaster-prone developing countries. Recognition of Swiss training for Chinese search and rescue teams
For seven years, Swiss experts have been supporting China in its efforts to establish search and rescue teams primarily for deployment following earthquakes. Urban search and rescue (USAR) experts from Switzerland's Humanitarian Aid Unit have made a major contribution to helping China become the country with the most USAR teams in the world. One Swiss expert has recently been awarded a prestigious prize by the Chinese state.
More than 50 per cent of all deaths caused by earthquakes in the world are Chinese.
A batch of emergency relief supplies was allocated to quake-affected people in southwest Yunnan Province.
BEIJING, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- China's central government has allocated relief fund totaling 8 million yuan (1.17 million U.S. dollars) for people affected by the magnitude 5 earthquake that shook southwest Yunnan Province on Nov. 2, the Ministry of Finance said Friday.
The money is used as financial aid for evacuating and resettling people affected by the quake.

BEIJING, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Civil Affairs on Tuesday sent 30,000 cotton-padded quilts and 30,000 cotton-padded clothes to quake-affected people in southwest Yunnan Province.
An earthquake measuring five on the Richter scale jolted Yunnan's west part on Monday morning, affecting 302,000 people, of whom 31 were injured and 61,000 relocated.
The ministry has sent 5,000 tents to the quake area to help affected people. Yunnan provincial government allocated 4.5 million yuan of relief funds.
