In mid November in 2008, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake shook the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, taking four lives, damaging bridges and roads, and forcing 1,000 families from their homes.

Most people around the world didn't hear about the quake and its aftershocks. It just wasn't big enough to make the headlines.

Nevertheless, trained Indonesian Red Cross Society volunteers immediately went into action in Sulawesi.

Thousands of residents in Buol regency, Central Sulawesi, were still staying Tuesday in makeshift shelters on higher ground fearing aftershocks which could trigger a tsunami.

Buol Regent Amran Batalipu told The Jakarta Post by phone that residents were still traumatized from Monday's quake.

SITUATION: A powerful 7.5-Richter scale earthquake struck off of Sulawesi, Indonesia, early Monday morning (November 17). The quake triggered a tsunami warning that caused widespread panic. The warning was then withdrawn immediately after being issued.

Buol Regency, in central Sulawesi, is among the hardest-hit areas. Twenty-five villages were seriously affected, with some 15,000 people displaced and 700 homes completely destroyed. Some have returned to their homes, according to CWS-Indonesia.

Jakarta_(dpa) _ The death toll from a powerful earthquake that struck off Indonesia's North Sulawesi province increased to six with nearly 80 people injured, officials said Tuesday.
