Berlin - In 2008, Johanniter mainly focused on providing medical care throughout 22 countries, and invested donations and subsidies in the amount of nine million Euros - half a million more than the previous year. Although, the share of donations has slightly decreased from 2007, subsidies from third-party donors, such as Germany's Foreign Office, have increased.

- No alert/outbreak reported from any earthquake affected districts, Balochistan during week 27, 2009

- 32 health facilities (Ziarat 23, Pishin 4 and Hernai 5) shared the weekly DEWS reporting a total of 5882 patient consultations during the week.

- ARI is the most common cause of morbidity accounting for 1707 (29%) of the total consultations (URTI 1637 and LRTI 70 patients).

- In children less than 5 years of age Acute diarrhoea is the second common cause of consultation accounting for 158 (14%) of the consultations in the age group

Pakistan, riven by political tensions in the last few days, has an ongoing need for food assistance which has deepened recently due to high food prices, conflict and natural disasters. In response, WFP is ramping up its programmes in 2009.

This year WFP aims to reach nine million beneficiaries in Pakistan, a country where 85 percent of the population live on an income of less than US$ 2 per day.

2008 was a year of major humanitarian challenges. Natural disasters such as Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar, the devastating earthquake in China, flooding in India and Brazil or the hurricanes in the Caribbean once again highlighted the dangers of the unbridled forces of nature. In the complex political crises in Africa, as well as in Afghanistan and Iraq, unresolved conflicts made it impossible to improve the precarious humanitarian situation of people living there.

Pakistan's Balochistan province has always been prone to natural disasters like floods, drought and earthquakes.

CERF Advisory Group met in Geneva

The Advisory Group met in Geneva on 19 and 20 November and included the eight members newly appointed by the Secretary-General. The Under-Secretary-General and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Mr. John Holmes, briefed the members on the progress of the Fund since their last meeting in June 2008 and the potential impact of the global financial crisis on CERF. The Advisory Group also discussed the management response to the Two-year Evaluation of the Fund.
