2008 was a year of major humanitarian challenges. Natural disasters such as Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar, the devastating earthquake in China, flooding in India and Brazil or the hurricanes in the Caribbean once again highlighted the dangers of the unbridled forces of nature. In the complex political crises in Africa, as well as in Afghanistan and Iraq, unresolved conflicts made it impossible to improve the precarious humanitarian situation of people living there.

In August 2008 Pakistan suffered a series of overlapping crises that led to substantial internal displacement and left hundreds of thousands in need of humanitarian assistance. Contribution In The First Year Of Three-Year Partnership Will Help Build Habitat Homes in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Ethiopia

DUBAI, 12th December 2008: ETA Star Property Developers, a real estate company based in the United Arab Emirates, recently presented its donation of two million dirham (about US$544,650) in the first year of a three-year partnership with Habitat for Humanity.

The contribution, which came from ETA Star's Homes for the Homeless campaign, will help Habitat to build homes with families in need in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Ethiopia.

CERF Advisory Group met in Geneva

The Advisory Group met in Geneva on 19 and 20 November and included the eight members newly appointed by the Secretary-General. The Under-Secretary-General and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Mr. John Holmes, briefed the members on the progress of the Fund since their last meeting in June 2008 and the potential impact of the global financial crisis on CERF. The Advisory Group also discussed the management response to the Two-year Evaluation of the Fund.

ISLAMABAD (NOVEMBER 20, 2008): The European Commission has released a grant of € 11.95 million (Rs. 1.22 Billion) to the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for reconstruction of Government middle schools in the earthquake affected districts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).

The amount will be used in the Education component of the Earthquake Emergency Assistance Project (EEAP).
