Berlin - In 2008, Johanniter mainly focused on providing medical care throughout 22 countries, and invested donations and subsidies in the amount of nine million Euros - half a million more than the previous year. Although, the share of donations has slightly decreased from 2007, subsidies from third-party donors, such as Germany's Foreign Office, have increased.

Pakistan, riven by political tensions in the last few days, has an ongoing need for food assistance which has deepened recently due to high food prices, conflict and natural disasters. In response, WFP is ramping up its programmes in 2009.

This year WFP aims to reach nine million beneficiaries in Pakistan, a country where 85 percent of the population live on an income of less than US$ 2 per day.

2008 was a year of major humanitarian challenges. Natural disasters such as Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar, the devastating earthquake in China, flooding in India and Brazil or the hurricanes in the Caribbean once again highlighted the dangers of the unbridled forces of nature. In the complex political crises in Africa, as well as in Afghanistan and Iraq, unresolved conflicts made it impossible to improve the precarious humanitarian situation of people living there.

CERF Advisory Group met in Geneva

The Advisory Group met in Geneva on 19 and 20 November and included the eight members newly appointed by the Secretary-General. The Under-Secretary-General and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Mr. John Holmes, briefed the members on the progress of the Fund since their last meeting in June 2008 and the potential impact of the global financial crisis on CERF. The Advisory Group also discussed the management response to the Two-year Evaluation of the Fund.

On 29 October, a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter scale shook Pakistan' s south-western province of Baluchistan in the early morning. The worst-hit areas were the districts of Ziarat, Pashin and Harnai.

The Situation

- According to government officials, about 8,000 households were completely damaged, displacing approximately 80,000 people. A total of 166 people died and 320 people have been injured.

- The emergency response operation is almost completed.
