Bekele Geleta, Secretary General, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), along with Alistair Henley, Head of Asia and Pacific Zone, IFRC on Sunday arrived at Islamabad on his three days official visit to Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS).

Talking to the media personnel, S.G. IFRC said that the Federation has so far provided Rs 11.521 billion to Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) to help people in disaster-hit areas.

The severe cold and dry winter winds that blow over Baluchistan are a recurring phenomenon, and those who call the region home are used to them.

However, this year has been different. With many homes reduced to rubble after the earthquake in late October, people in Ziarat and Pishin have been forced to stay in tents while the mercury dipped to a cruel minus 6 degrees Celsius during the night.

Background

On 29 October, a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter scale shook Pakistan' s south-western province of Baluchistan in the early morning. The worst-hit areas were the districts of Ziarat, Pashin and Harnai.

The Situation

- According to government officials, about 8,000 households were completely damaged, displacing approximately 80,000 people. A total of 166 people died and 320 people have been injured.

- The emergency response operation is almost completed.
