DRC was formally approached by the Chechen Government to assist with acute aid in remote mountain-villages already destroyed in the second Chechen war.
"With winter coming we need to provide blankets, bedding and winter coats to the worst affected families in order to secure appropriate living conditions for the winter.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies' regional representation is a small core unit providing comprehensive technical, funding and programme support to the National Societies of Belarus, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine.
Grozny (ICRC) - The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), working in cooperation with the Chechen Branch of the Russian Red Cross Society (RRC), delivered emergency supplies last week to over 2,700 families in three villages in the Kurchaloy region and one village in Gudermes region.
The villages had been severely affected by an earthquake on 11 October. The supplies included tarpaulins, blankets, hygiene kits, kitchen sets, candles and jerrycans.
MOSCOW, Oct 14, 2008 (Xinhua via COMTEX News Network) -- More than 1,000 buildings in southern Russian were damaged in Saturday's earthquake that has claimed 13 lives and affected thousands of local residents, local media reported on Tuesday.
"All in all, 1,027 buildings and facilities were damaged, including 1,014 private houses and 13 socially important facilities such as hospitals," Itar-Tass cited a spokesman of the Russian Ministry for Emergencies.
The quake measuring over 5 on the Richter scale hit Russia's North Caucasus region of Chechnya at about 1 p.m.
