Pendant trois ans, les médecins et le personnel soignant ont traité les patients dans des tentes de fortune. En mars 2012, tous les patients ont été transférés dans de nouveaux bâtiments, construits avec l'aide de la Coopération belge.

GIHUNDWE, Rwanda, 15 March 2011 - A mini-revolution has taken place for vulnerable members of a small community living near Lake Kivu in the Rusizi District of south-west Rwanda, an area struck by a series of earthquakes in 2008.

Thanks to a joint initiative by the Government of Japan, UNICEF and non-governmental organization Caritas Cyangugu, the quality of life and health of more than 100 households in the village of Gihundwe has rapidly improved through the installation of eco-san latrines.

RUSIZI, Rwanda, 20 January 2011 - A Japanese Government delegation - joined by UNICEF officials and local leaders from Rusizi District in western Rwanda - recently visited several sites where rehabilitation work is under way in the aftermath of a deadly earthquake that hit the area in February 2008.

Dadaab Refugee Camps, Kenya - They were originally built to accommodate 90,000 refugees. Today the population is at 280,000 and is growing by an average of 7000 a month. On World Refugee Day, 20 June, CARE International is calling attention to the urgent needs of the people in the refugee camps of Dadaab, Kenya.

Overcrowding in the camps is placing severe stress on the resources of the region and surrounding communities. UN standards for the treatment of refugees call for 20 litres of water per person per day.

The East Africa Rift Valley System is one of the most seismically active regions in the African Continent. The Lake Kivu basin is among the most active region in this Rift. Earthquakes frequently damage villages and towns in the Lake Kivu basin. The earthquakes also generate landslides on slopes of mountains or hills surrounding Lake Kivu. Seismic studies and field observations show that, since 1997 the Lake Kivu basin has become more active than usual.

Crisis in Chad-30,000 Refugees in Cameroon

Over 30,000 Chadians fled across the border into north-eastern Cameroon after fighting in N'Djamena between armed groups and the Government in early February. More than 4,600 families comprising some 20,000 persons have registered with UNHCR and indicated their intention to stay in Cameroon for the time being. The refugees began to arrive on 2 February and were initially hosted in two temporary sites as well as in schools, churches and private homes in Kousséri.
