Executive summary

In line with its strategy for 2008 to 2012, the Red Crescent Society of Tajikistan is building its capacities and scaling up its services to assist the most vulnerable people in the country. This is in alignment with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies' Global Agenda, thus contributing to achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). At the same time it follows the Istanbul commitments and resolutions calling for a stronger engagement in migration.

WASHINGTON, DC - The UN World Food Program (WFP) on Friday welcomed US government contributions in September totaling US$110.7 million for the hungry poor in 11 countries from Latin America to Asia. Nearly half the resources were targeted to Sudan, home to WFP's single-largest operation in the world.

"These contributions, which represent the first of the US government's new fiscal year, set a welcome precedent for donors and send a message of hope to vulnerable populations throughout the world," said Jordan Dey, Director of US Relations for WFP.

Du 21 au 24 juillet, un tremblement de terre suivi d'un écoulement de boue a tue 15 personnes, touché 19 villages, détruit 6 écoles et plus de 1000 maisons et bâtiments administratifs dans la province septentrionale de Soghd. A la suite de l'évaluation des besoins faite par le gouvernement et la communauté internationale, la France a décidé l'envoi sur place de 100 tentes et 1000 couvertures pour les sinistrés de ce pays montagneux. Le coût total de cette opération d'aide humanitaire de la France est estimé à 85.000 Euros.

Situation overview

The response to the disasters, which hit Tajikistan on 21-22 July 2007 is ongoing. The situation in Asht and Darvaz districts are under control and almost all urgent needs of the affected population have been met. The situation in Rasht District, which was affected by an earthquake on 22nd of July 2007, requires mobilization of additional resources.

On August 2nd UN Country Team issued an Appeal requesting 2.2 mln USD to respond to the earthquake in Rasht district only.

This appeal is intended to cover the urgent remaining needs and recovery activities of the population affected by the earthquake which hit Rasht district in central part of Tajikistan on the 22nd of July 2007. Three persons were killed, 207 houses have been completely destroyed and more than 1,216 houses have been partially damaged, affecting more than 12,000 people.

Situation overview

An earthquake measuring 5.5 on Richter scale, and mudflows triggered by torrential rains, killed 15 people in Tajikistan and damaged more than 1,000 houses on 21 - 24 of July 2007. This information is confirmed through official data received from the Committee of Emergency Situations and Civil Defense, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and as a result of REACT Team assessments conducted on 23rd and 24th of July in Asht and Rasht districts.

DUSHANBE, 23 July 2007 (IRIN) - An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale, and a landslide triggered by torrential rains, killed 14 people in Tajikistan over the weekend, according to officials.

The landslide ripped through a resort area in the Asht District of northern Soghd Province on 22 July at 2pm local time.
