Hope Weiner in Ruichang city

Wei an Ying, 56, was just beginning to recover from disastrous floods that in September 2005 accompanied a typhoon that robbed him of his autumn cotton crops and damaged his house.

But on Saturday, 26 November, a magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck his village of Xi Xin Qiao, near the city of Ruichang. The earthquake destroyed all that remained of his home. The quake wrecked 150,000 other homes and forced 600,000 people to evacuate.

HONG KONG, Jan 4, 2006 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Hong Kong decided Wednesday to grant 1 million HK dollars from its Disaster Relief Fund to help earthquake victims in Jiangxi province, southeast of Chinese Mainland.
The quake measuring 5.7 on Richter scale hit the province late in November and affected the lives of nearly 5 million people.

The Disaster Relief Fund was established in December, 1993 for emergency help in places outside Hong Kong.

NANCHANG, Dec 2, 2005 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu inspected the earthquake-hit Ruichang City and Jiujiang County in east China's Jiangxi Province, calling for more efforts to help resettle the victims.

An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale jolted the places on Nov. 26.

As of Friday afternoon, aftershocks are still felt in the area.

The 11 seismographs installed by the China Seismological Bureau recorded 116 aftershocks of the earthquake from 12:00 a.m. Thursday to 10:00 a.m.

The possibility of tremors of around 4 on the Richter scale in the region between Ruichang and Jiujiang cities can not be ruled out, but the damage will be small, said a panel of seismologists in a report presented to the earthquake control and disaster relief headquarters.

Chinese Red Cross Promptly Responded to Jiangxi Earthquake

An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter Scale hit Jiangxi Province on 26th November 2005 at 8.49 a.m. Considered the worst quake to strike Jiangxi in 60 years, has affected over 50 counties among Rui Chang and Jiu Jiang prefecture. The Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) -- Jiangxi Branch arrived instantly to the disaster hit area for emergency relief assistance and has immediately distributed 60 tents donated by Hong Kong Red Cross (HKRC), which is the first batch arrived relief material.

Beijing (dpa) - The death toll has risen to at least 21 after an earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale hit China's eastern province of Jiangxi and neighbouring areas on Saturday, state media said on Sunday.

Officials in Jiangxi's Jiujiang city, close to the epicentre of the earthquake, had reported 13 dead by Sunday morning, the semi-official China News Service said.

The Ministry of Civil Affairs said 247 people were injured in Jiujiang, with another six dead and 130 injured in the nearby city of Ruichang.
