Lima (dpa) - Two moderate earthquakes in quick succession caused at least 10 injuries and collapsed 300 adobe houses in southern Peru, authorities said Sunday.

The quakes on Saturday, registering 4.0 and 4.2 on the Richter scale, struck the Andean region of Moquegua. The area around Omate was cut off from the outside world by landslides following the geological events.

Hundreds of people spent the night outdoors, and civil defence authorities sent tents, blankets, medical supplies and food to the region.

The affected area is located 700 kilometers northeast of Lima. The quake lasted approximately 30 seconds and was felt throughout a radius of 800 kilometers, including parts of Ecuador, Colombia, and Brazil.

The Salvation Army stepped up its relief programme in southern Peru after two earthquakes in quick succession on Saturday 1 October brought further devastation to that caused by the earthquake which hit the area a week earlier, killing five people, injuring 50 others and leaving hundreds of families homeless. The double earthquakes added 300 more families to the long list of those needing assistance.
