Executive summary

Comprising 45 countries in South Asia, East Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific, the region is home to more than half of the world's population, the majority of whom are poor and among the most disadvantaged in the world. Some 600 million women, men and children in the region live below the USD 1 a day poverty line, while 1.8 billion survive on less than USD 2 a day. Compounding the situation, the region is also highly disaster-prone. The diversity, scale and frequency of natural disasters in the region are daunting.

The Swedish Committee for Afghanistan (SCA) is working on the recovery of its schools and its clinic in Nahrin district, in Baghlan province, in northern Afghanistan in a post-earthquake recovery project after the March earthquakes.

The initial foundations have been cleared and mud-bricking begun on the homes of several hundred families in the Shomali Valley, north of Kabul, reports Donna Derr, CWS coordinator of international emergency response. Fifteen hundred returning refugee and internally-displaced families build their new homes with building materials provided through the CWS Afghanistan Rehabilitation Housing Program. CWS is purchasing the materials within the region.

Her statement was made at the World Health Assembly, the WHO's 191 Member States' decision making body, which held its fifty-fifth annual meeting between 13 and18 May in Geneva.

MANILA, PHILIPPINES (30 May 2002) - A US$15 million package of technical assistance grants for wide-ranging capacity building in Afghanistan was approved today by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). This is the first step towards a resumption of full ADB operations in Afghanistan since 1979.

One cluster of grants is to build capacity in several sectors - agriculture and natural resources, education and health, road transport and energy, and finance.
