The Philippine National Red Cross Disaster Management Services has mobilized all chapters in areas hit by an earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter Scale on March 6, to do an immediate needs assessment, and a relief distribution if required. Meanwhile, all members of the national and local level Disaster Response Teams have been put on standby in case of after-shocks.

GENERAL SANTOS, Philippines (Reuters) - Eleven people died and more than 100 were injured on Wednesday when an earthquake struck at dawn in the southern Philippines, wrecking houses and forcing thousands to flee for fear of tidal waves.

The strongest tremor to hit the quake-prone country in more than a decade knocked out power, plunging cities and towns in Mindanao island into darkness, officials said.
