Humanitarian professionals in the area continued to call for Central Asia-wide collaboration in tackling them. The key areas for regional action in Central Asia are: water, trade, transport, communications, trans-boundary environment issues and drug trafficking, experts say.

A spokesman for the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Tajikistan dismisses a report saying that thousands of Afghan refugees on the country's border with Afghanistan have gone home. "We visited the area last week and know that the population has remained consistent," Aurvasi Patel, a protection officer for UNHCR in the Tajik capital, Dushanbe, told IRIN.

ISLAMABAD, 7 March (IRIN) - Over 470 houses, about 30 schools and 30 medical facilities were damaged by the powerful earthquake that struck Tajikistan and the rest of the region on Sunday, 3 March, according to information received by IRIN on Thursday from the Tajik Emergency Situations Ministry (ESM) and the Tajik Red Crescent Society.

MOSCOW, Jan 15, 2002 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The strong earthquake rocking southern Tajikistan six days ago has deprived more than 600 people of their houses, according to reports reaching here Tuesday from Dushanbe, capital of Tajikistan.

The quake on January 9 measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale struck mainly Tajikistan's Rogun and Darband regions.

A scene of utter devastation was revealed yesterday as the first outsiders reached remote villages shattered by an earthquake which measured 5.4 on the Richter Scale leaving three young children dead, six injured and 1,350 people homeless in the depths of the harsh Tajikistan winter. The epicentre was in Obi-Garm district, a mountainous area 130 kms south-east of Dushanbe.

Three children died, 54 people were injured, and 52 homes were destroyed by an earthquake that hit the town of Rogun, 140 kilometers northeast of Dushanbe, on 9 January, Russian agencies reported. The quake registered 6-7 on the Richter scale. Further tremors of up to 3-4 on the Richter scale were registered on 10 January. Reuters on 10 January reported that the Tajik government appealed to the international community on 10 January for emergency aid, in particular food and warm clothing, noting temperatures in the affected area have plummeted to minus 16 degrees Celsius.
