Tajikistan: Earthquake - Jan 2002

Disaster description

An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale struck an area 100 km east of Dushanbe at 11:45 on 9 January. Reports from the Tajik Ministry of Emergency Situations placed the number of casualties at three dead and 50 injured. The two villages of Taghi Akbar and Talkhan Chashma, close to the city of Rogun, appeared the worst affected, with a total of about 50 houses damaged or destroyed. (OCHA, 14 Jan 2002)
