In 2001, the Federal Foreign Office Task Force for Humanitarian Aid funded aid projects around the world to a tune of DM 131.6 million (67.1 million euro), representing an increase of 13% on the year 2000. A total of approximately 470 projects were financed, of which 40 projects were concerned with humanitarian demining.

Swiss Re's latest sigma study reports man-made and natural catastrophes claimed more than 33 000 lives worldwide in 2001. At USD 34.4 billion, the burden on property insurance due to catastrophe losses was extremely high - with an estimated USD 19 billion incurred by property and business interruption losses arising from the 11 September event. Furthermore, the insurance industry is having to cover liability and life insurance losses related to the attack which are estimated between USD 16.5 and 39 billion.

UMCOR continues to support earthquake recovery efforts in El Salvador and India. The Methodist Church in El Salvador has sent UMCOR a request for $1million to build 500 houses for low-income earthquake survivors. The church is coordinating their work with ACT (Action by Churches Together) which has provided the plans for the homes and other technical support. Please give to Advance #511447-8 "El Salvador Emergency." In India, UMCOR's partner CASA (Church's Auxiliary for Social Action) will be rebuilding 1,249 homes for vulnerable people in seven villages.

India - Church World Service is assisting long-time partner, the Church's Auxiliary for Social Action (CASA) as it embarks on a housing reconstruction project in western Gujarat province, India. The cornerstone of these efforts is earthquake- and cyclone-resistant homes for 1,249 families, as well as reconstruction of schools and other public buildings in seven villages. CASA has begun construction on the homes, single story stone and brick structures, with an estimated cost of around $2,000 apiece.
