BRISBANE, Nov 19 (Reuters) - At least one person has died in a series of powerful earthquakes in northeast Papua New Guinea and officials said on Sunday they feared further casualties in the remote region as more damage reports come in.

The National Disaster and Emergency Service said a 12-year-old boy was the first reported casualty of five major earthquakes that have struck the New Britain and New Ireland island provinces, 800 km (500 miles) northeast of Port Moresby, since Thursday.

The Disaster
An earthquake measuring 8 on the Richter scale hit the coast of the New Ireland region (3.97S, 152.32E) at 4:54 am (UTC) on 16 November. This was followed by a quake of magnitude 7.7 which hit a nearby area 5.24S/153.06E at 7:42 am (UTC). After the earthquakes, landslides occurred on the road to Gazelle Peninsula. The authorities in Northern Papua New Guinna have appealed for calm following a large earth quake this afternoon.

Richard Dinnen reports the quake measured more than Seven on the Richter Scale.

The quake was felt across East New Britain and New Ireland provinces. Residents in Rabaul Town have told me the ground shook strongly for almost a minute and that water in swimming pools and tanks developed half a metre waves while the quake continued.
