A strong earthquake measuring 6.5 on Richter struck Central America early on Sunday morning, 11 July followed by many small aftershocks and another major tremor on 13 July, measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale. Little material damage has been reported but the unusually strong quake caused widespread terror amongst a population still recovering from the shock of Hurricane Mitch, which devastated these countries last year. The epicentre of the earthquake appears to have been in the department of Izabal, on the Atlantic coast of Guatemala.
