India: Earthquake - May 1997

Disaster description

An earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale struck central India at 04:22 hrs. local time on 22 May 1997 (22:52 hrs. GMT 21 May). The epicenter is reported to be at latitude 23.1 degrees north and longitude 80.1 degrees east, in the Jabalpore area in the state of Madhya Pradesh. Latest reports indicate 27 people dead, 200 people injured, and about 500 houses destroyed. (UN DHA, 22 May 1997)

At least 38 people were killed and more than 1,000 injured in an earthquake Thursday that struck the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.
