Afghanistan: Earthquake - May 1998

Disaster description

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), an earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale occurred in northern Afghanistan on 30 May, 1998 at 06.22 GMT (10.52 local time), at location 37.2 North, 69.9 East, some 40 miles WNW of Faizabad (i.e. approximately same location as the scale 6.1 earthquake on 04 February 1998). Emergency deliveries following the 30 May earthquake to the three affected districts of Rustaq, Chah-Ab and Shar-e-Buzurg have now been concluded. This earthquake had been the second one during this year, with 6.9 intensity on the Richter scale, resulting in some 4,000 persons killed, 17,000 families affected and 16,000 homes damaged or destroyed.
