The final death toll was put at more than 1,700, with some 5,000 people injured and thousands more left homeless.

thanks to LWR's collaboration with the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC). A shipment of
quilts valued at over $35,000 is on its way to Iran in response to an earthquake which shook the
country in early May. The quake, which measured over 7.1 on the Richter scale, caused over
1,500 deaths and left another 50,000 people homeless. The shipment of almost 4,000 quilts will
be distributed by the MCC and the Iranian Red Crescent Society. Lutheran World Relief works

Six weeks after the Khorasan earthquake , the Iranian Red Crescent Society still has 360 aid workers in the affected area, providing food, drinking water and shower facilities for victims. With the addition of 620 people left homeless by recent flooding to its relief rolls, it is currently caring for some 141,000 people.

I. SECOND INTERNATIONAL APPEAL

1. Further to the situation report no. 7 dated 27 May 1997, DHA held, on 28 May, an information meeting in Geneva to present the Second International Appeal by the United Nations to the donor community.

2. The meeting was chaired by Mr. Martin Griffiths, Deputy to the USG for Humanitarian Affairs and Director of DHA Geneva, and the UNDAC team leader presented the findings of their mission and the contents of the appeal. Representatives from IFRC also provided briefings on their relief efforts.

As reported in DHA Geneva Situation Report No. 6 of 19 May 1997 on the earthquake Southern Khorasan, Iran, a joint Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran / United Nations mission visited the disaster affected area during the period of 19-22 May 1997. The mission identified essential requirements for the transition from relief to emergency rehabilitation.

Iranian Red Crescent Society workers involved in the search and rescue operation have been withdrawn, now that this part of the operation is over, but several hundred are still in the disaster area providing hot meals and preparing emergency food distributions . All the homeless have been housed in tents. Contributions to the Federation's appeal stand at CHF 8.8 million, representing 75% coverage.
