Chad: Cholera Outbreak - Jul 2025
Disaster description
The cholera outbreak continues to spread, reaching Sila province after Ouaddaï, where Abdi health district reported four cases, including one death, last week. In Ouaddaï, three health districts are affected, with Farchana and Amléyouna recently reporting additional cases. Since 13 July, Ouaddaï has recorded 1,016 cases and 68 deaths as of 24 August 2025. State authorities and health partners are awaiting 1 million cholera vaccine doses from WHO to launch vaccination campaigns. (OCHA, 26 Aug 2025)
Since the confirmation of the first cholera case on 13 July 2025 at the Dougui refugee camp in Chokoyane District, the outbreak has rapidly spread to both refugee settlements and host communities. As of 3 September, the epidemic affects 33 health areas across eight health districts in Ouaddai and Sila provinces. A total of 1,604 suspected cases have been reported to date, including 55 cases confirmed by culture and 113 associated deaths. Of these fatalities, 51 occurred within the community, resulting in an overall fatality rate (CFR) of 7%. (UNICEF, 7 Sep 2025)
As of 13 September, the epidemic has affected 42 health areas across nine health districts: Chokoyane, Hadjer Hadid, Adré, Farchana, Amleyouna, and Abéché in Ouaddaï Province; Abdi and Goz Beida in Sila Province; and Bitkine in Guéra Province. 2,061 suspected cases have been reported to date, including 64 cases confirmed by culture and 134 associated deaths (61 occurred within the community). As of 18 September 2025, the outbreak is now active in 3 provinces and 8 districts: ve in Ouaddaï (Chokoyane, Hadjer Hadid, Adré, Farchana, Amleyouna), two in Sila (Abdi, Goz Beïda), and one in Guéra (Bitkine). As of 20 October 2025, the cholera outbreak is active in 3 provinces and 12 districts: eight in Ouaddaï (Chokoyane, Hadjer Hadid, Adré, Amleyouna, Abeché, Abougoudam, Amdam and Marfa), three in Sila (Abdi, Goz Beïda and Tissi), and one in Guéra (Bitkine). A cumulative total of 2,773 cases and 156 deaths have been reported — including 69 community deaths — resulting in a case fatality rate (CFR) of 5.63%. As of November 6th, the outbreak has affected 97 health areas across 16 health districts: Chokoyane, Hadjer Hadid, Adré, Amleyouna, Abeché, Abougoudam, Amdam, and Marfa in Ouaddaï Province; Abdi, Goz Beida, and Tissi in Sila Province; Bitkine in Guéra; and Bokoro, Massaguet, and Gama in Hadjer Lamis Province. A total of 2,889 suspected cases have been reported, including 111 confirmed cases through culture, and 164 associated deaths (75 of which occurred within the community).
