Kenya: Cholera Outbreak - Apr 2025
Disaster description
On 8 April, the Ministry of Health issued a statement on the ongoing cholera outbreak affecting several parts of the country. As of 6 April, 97 confirmed cases had been recorded, more than double the 43 cases reported by WHO on 20 March. Six deaths have been confirmed, resulting in a concerning case fatality rate (CFR) of 6.2%. The outbreak is being driven by limited access to safe water, poor hygiene, and inadequate sanitation—conditions particularly acute in Nairobi's informal settlements. These factors pose significant risks for further spread, especially during the current rainy season. (ECHO, 9 Apr 2025)
Since the beginning of the cholera outbreak in February 2025, Kenya has faced a cholera outbreak now affecting the Coastal, Lower Eastern, and Western regions. As of 13 May, 244 cases and 11 deaths have been reported, with a 4.5% case fatality rate. All affected counties (Migori, Kisumu, Nairobi, and Kwale) are also experiencing flooding, which has damaged sanitation infrastructure and contributed to the spread of the disease. The index cholera case was reported on 12 February 2025 in Sakuri B Village, Kuria East, Migori County, after six individuals presented with acute watery diarrhea. KRCS and local health authorities launched a joint response using available resources. (IFRC, 27 May 2025)
