18 October 2019, Nuku’alofa, Tonga:

The Tonga Ministry of Health advises that cases of measles have been identified in a high school rugby group, who were playing rugby in New Zealand in September. The team returned to Tonga on 1st October. The Ministry has taken rapid steps to prevent further spread of the virus including isolating the current cases at home, vaccinating contacts of the cases and quarantining the remaining squad members, staff and other contacts.

Of the 28 specimens of suspected measles cases sent to Victorian Infectious Disease Reference Laboratory Melbourne, Australia on the 30th Sept 2019, twelve (12) results have been received over the week end. Of these twelve there were four confirmed cases; one adult and three children. All have been treated and discharged with no complications.

  • The Ministry of Health held a news conference in Apia on 9 October to announce a suspected measles case that may be transmitted from the Auckland outbreak. The MoH further reported if lab results sent to Australia were positive, an outbreak would be declared.
  • The Government of Samoa plans to set up isolation facilities for patients with measles, creating space in Apia for a children's pop-up vaccination clinic to speed up herd immunity, and extra airport passenger surveillance.

Samoa's health officials are awaiting international test results after an adult tested positive in Samoa for measles, which is thought to have been transmitted from the Auckland outbreak.

Photo: Samoa Ministry of Health The Ministry of Health held a press conference in Apia late Wednesday and RNZ Pacific's correspondent, who attended the conference, said if lab results sent on to Melbourne are positive, for even one measles case, an outbreak would be declared.

Since 2017, there has been a global resurgence of measles cases. In proximity to Pacific Island countries and areas, outbreaks of measles have been reported in Australia, Cambodia, China (including Hong Kong and Macao), Japan, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Republic of Korea, United States of America and Viet Nam.
