As of 17th October 2019 seven laboratory confirmed cases and eight epidemiologically linked cases of measles have occurred in Tonga. There are no other cases pending currently.

According to recent reports, there are 213 suspected and 15 confirmed cases of measles in Samoa, the majority of newly suspected cases have been on Upolu Island. The Samoan Ministry of Health has advised the public to get vaccinated against measles, which they can do in any health facility on the island.

The Fiji Ministry of Health and Medical Services is closely monitoring the outbreaks of measles in the region: first the ongoing New Zealand outbreak followed by recent outbreaks declared for Samoa and Tonga.

Because we have an effective immunization program, measles is rare in Fiji. However, outbreaks around the world, including in neighboring countries, puts us at risk of having travel related cases of measles.

In response to the outbreaks in the region, the Ministry has taken the following actions to prevent and respond to potential cases in Fiji:

The associate health minister, Julie Anne Genter, said New Zealand has offered advice and assistance and stands ready to help in any way.

"I understand Samoa is working through its response and authorities have requested that any support from New Zealand, waits until Samoa's needs are more clear," Ms Genter said.

Epidemics were declared in Samoa and Tonga this week, and both were spread from New Zealand, where an outbreak in Auckland has affected nearly 2000 people.

Further to the Ministry of Health Measles Epidemic Update released on the 21 October 2019:
Following is an update of the figures since the Ministry of Health report dated the 21 October:  44 New suspected cases were reported to surveillance unit since the last update.

Majority of these new reported suspected measles cases being on Upolu island.

 This brings the total number of reported suspected measles cases as of the 22 October to a total of 213 suspected for Measles. Out of the 44 new suspect cases reported 7 (16%) were admitted to hospital.

• As of 20th October 2019 there have been 169 suspected measles cases with 7 confirmed cases, 82 laboratory results pending.

• To date, there has been one reported death of a 14 month-old baby highly suspected measles awaiting laboratory confirmation; child is unvaccinated

• Of the 169 cases, 53% are children below 4 years old and 20% are 20-30 year olds

• 91% (153) of suspected cases reside in Upolu and 9% (16) in Savaii

18 October 2019, Nuku’alofa, Tonga:

The Tonga Ministry of Health advises that cases of measles have been identified in a high school rugby group, who were playing rugby in New Zealand in September. The team returned to Tonga on 1st October. The Ministry has taken rapid steps to prevent further spread of the virus including isolating the current cases at home, vaccinating contacts of the cases and quarantining the remaining squad members, staff and other contacts.
