Critically important to ensure every child gets two drops of the polio vaccine during the campaign

Islamabad, 16 June 2019 – Polio vaccination campaign will start in core reservoirs on June 17 to vaccinate children up to five years. During this special campaign, thousands of frontline workers will go door to door to ensure more than 10.25 million children receive two drops of the vaccine which will protect them against the poliovirus.

ISLAMABAD: Another polio case was reported in Bannu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to Health Ministry, the poliovirus had been confirmed in a 1.5-year-old boy in Bannu area of KP, bringing the total number of polio cases in the country to 24 this year.

Reports added that samples of the child were sent for tests on May 31.

It is worthy to note here that Poliovirus is creating havoc in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The virus has been eliminated from the rest of the countries of the world.

SHANGLA: A polio case has surfaced for the first time in the last two decades in Shangla district after the virus was detected in an 18-month-old boy, who lives in Dedal Kamach area along the bank of the Indus.

Dedal Kamach is connec­ted to Buner and Torghar districts and is a border region of Shangla district.

According to the district coordinator for the Extended Programme for Immunisa­tion (EPI), Dr Wajid Ali Khan, the case was reported by the locals and was later confirmed by the EPI team.

According to reports, officials of Health Ministry said that poliovirus had been confirmed in a 2-year-old boy in Shangla area of KP, bringing the total number of polio cases in the country to 20 this year.

ISLAMABAD: After a delay of about seven months, Pakistan has finally decided to implement the recommendations of the Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) on polio to eradicate the virus of the crippling disease for good.

The IMB’s 16th report, released in October 2018, stated that the Pakistan Polio Programme was fooling itself into thinking that it had made any progress at all since 2017 and suggested to eradicate the virus in the sewage because it (virus) could bounce back any time.

As per the current National Emergency Action Plan (NEAP) for Polio Eradication, a National Immunization Days Campaign (NIDs) took place in April 2019, vaccinating a total of 37.6 million children across Pakistan through the support of up to 260,000 polio frontline workers. In addition to vaccinating the 0-5 years standard target age group, extended age vaccination for children aged 5-10 years was implemented across all Union Councils (UCs) of Peshawar, 12 UCs of Rawalpindi, and 11 UCs of Islamabad.

QUETTA: Commissioner Usman Ali Khan has directed the divisional task force to ensure strict security measures during the upcoming anti-polio drive across Balochistan.

He said that through collective efforts poliovirus could be eradicated from the country.

Following recent attacks on polio workers in Chaman and Peshawar, the Quetta commissioner chaired a meeting of the divisional task force to review security concerns ahead of the anti-polio drive in the province next month.

ISLAMABAD: Two more polio cases have been reported from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, taking the tally for the current year to 19.

Almost five months of the year have passed, but the number of polio cases found in KP has reached eight which is equal to the cases reported in the province in 2016.

Only two cases last year and one in 2017 were reported from KP.

The recent cases have been reported from Dera Ismail Khan and Bannu.

ISLAMABAD: The polio programme will undergo major operational reforms after a continuous rise in the number of polio cases across the country.

The reforms include reducing the number of visits and follow-ups by polio vaccination teams, eliminating the use of data registers and limiting the number of questions families are asked.

Pakistan is one of the last two countries, alongside Afghanistan, where poliovirus cases are being reported.
