• La communauté humanitaire estime à 246,000 le nombre de personnes déplacées internes (PDI) dans la seule région du Sud-Ouest

• Le CERF alloue 5,1 millions de dollars pour répondre aux besoins urgents des PDI dans le Nord-Ouest et le Sud-Ouest

• En moyenne, 300 humanitaires sont tués, détenus ou blessés chaque année. La Journée mondiale de l’action humanitaire du 19 août nous a rappelé que les humanitaires ne sont pas une cible #NotATarget

Highlights

• The ongoing cholera outbreak in the North region spread to the Centre region in July. There have been 142 reported cases so far, 14 of which are confirmed, and a total of 12 deaths recorded. The North region has been most affected with seven of its fifteen health districts affected, accounting for 87 of the 142 suspected cases. Two of the Central region’s 30 health districts have so far been affected, where 55 suspected cases have been reported. UNICEF is supporting the prevention activities through the provision of supplies and social mobilization.

The number of cholera cases is the highest for the time of year since 2015. Two regions, Centre (Yaoundé) and Nord (bordering Nigeria) have reported a total of 178 cases, including 12 deaths. Five other regions are on alert (Littoral, Extrême Nord, Est, Sud Ouest, Sud) as a total of 57 suspected cases have been reported.

Situation Overview

  • Over 20,000 cholera cases and 255 deaths have been reported as of week 30 in Lake Chad Basin (LCB). This is 8 times more than the average cholera caseload over the past four years.

  • Nigeria is the most affected country with 18,000 cases.
    The outbreak has spread into Cameroon and Niger (on week 27).

  • Major cities of Maradi (Niger), Yaounde and Douala (Cameroon) have confirmed cholera cases.
