Kinshasa/Nairobi/Geneva, 15 June 2018 —While progress has been made to contain the spread of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) the response on the ground has entered a new critical phase as national authorities, international agencies and local organizations focus on ending the outbreak, says the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

The current Ebola outbreak is happening in three health zones in Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Equateur Province: Wangata, Bikoro, and Iboko. This revised Emergency Appeal will support 400,000 of the most vulnerable people in these areas for six months, and will also undertake preparedness and prevention work in Equateur’s four neighbouring Provinces.

Snapshot

The outbreak was confirmed on 8 May. By 14 June, 66 cases – 38 confirmed as Ebola Virus Disease – had been reported, and 28 people had died.

  • On the 13th of April, a total pledge of $500 million was made by donors during the Geneva conference towards the humanitarian crisis in the DRC as the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs highlights the consequences of violence by armed groups, ethnic strife, political instability, and food insecurity on children and civilians.
