The influx of refugees from Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) that began in mid-December 2017, following the eruption of interethnic violence in Ituri continues – adding to the influx from North Kivu.

All new arrivals from the DRC are granted refugee status by the Government of Uganda on a prima facie basis. Partners provide reception assistance and relocation to settlements.

The Uganda Operation is currently reviewing the DRC component of the Uganda integrated RRP, based on the new planning figure of 150,000 new refugee arrivals in 2018.

Kinshasa/Nairobi/Geneva, 05 June 2018— A Red Cross medical team has been deployed to the centre of the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

The team – made up of doctors, nurses and water and sanitation experts from six Red Cross Societies – will support five health facilities in the city of Mbandaka to prevent the spread of the disease and to support people who have been infected. So far, 25 people have been killed by the virus.

Kinshasa - La semaine dernière, en République démocratique du Congo (RDC), des cas d’Ebola ont été confirmés à Mbandaka, une ville d’environ 1,2 million d’habitants située à 150 kilomètres de la zone de santé de Bikoro, épicentre de l’épidémie, dans la province de l’Equateur.

Le fait que Mbandaka soit reliée par des voies fluviales à Kinshasa, la capitale de la RDC, et à d’autres villes en RDC et en République centrafricaine, alimente la crainte que le virus ne se propage davantage.

Addis Ababa, 01 June 2018- After recruiting and training 18 Congolese volunteers, Arica CDC has just deployed them to Equator province to support the response to Ebola Virus Disease in DR Congo.

The responders, who are former volunteers of the African Union Support to the Ebola Outbreak in West Africa (ASEOWA) in the 2014-16 outbreak, they also participated in the post-Ebola enhanced surveillance in the Democratic Republic of Congo in July 2017 in the province of Bas-Uélé.

1. Situation Update

The outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo remains active. On 30 May 2018, one new confirmed EVD case was reported in Iboko. Three laboratory specimens (from suspected cases reported previously in Iboko (2) and Wangata (1) health zones) tested negative. There were no new suspected cases and deaths.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has contributed $8 million dollars to support the joint Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and World Health Organization (WHO) Strategic Response Plan to the outbreak (currently budgeted at $56.7 million). In addition to this funding, USAID has provided personal protective equipment, laboratory supplies, the mobilization of two existing mobile labs, and a robust presence on the ground.

  • IOM constructed 200 emergency shelters in Katanika displacement site and provided in collaboration with the UNHCR and the RRMP 1,748 IDP households in Kikumbe displacement site with shelter kits.

  • IOM trained 30 staff on the Displacement Tracking Matrix in preparation for the second baseline study in seven provinces.

  • To date, IOM has transferred 3,154 IDPs from collective centres in Kalemie to displacement sites, and provided voluntary return assistance to 390 IDPs to return to their areas of origin.

NAMUGONGO - All pilgrims arriving from Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are undergoing screening for Ebola, according to a statement from the ministry of health.

This comes after the Health Ministry in the DRC the declared the ninth outbreak of Ebola virus in the country, in early May.

Since the last Disease Outbreak News on 23 May 2018, six additional cases have been laboratory confirmed for Ebola virus disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Recently available information has enabled the classification of some cases to be updated1 .
