On 8 May 2018, the Ministry of Health (MOH) of the Democratic Republic of the Congo declared an outbreak of Ebola virus disease in Bikoro Health Zone, Equateur Province. This is the ninth outbreak of Ebola virus disease over the last four decades in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with the most recent occurring in May 2017.

Kampala 10/05/2018 – On May 8, 2018, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) declared an outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the Western border town of Bikoro. Two cases since been confirmed with several suspected cases.

Bikoro town is located 1,945 kilometers away from the Ugandan border at Mpondwe, Kasese.

(New York, 11 May 2018) Emergency Relief Coordinator (ERC) and Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Mark Lowcock, has announced an immediate $2 million allocation from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to help humanitarian partners in the DRC fight and contain a new outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD).

“We know that coordinated early response will be critical containing this outbreak. This CERF allocation will help our humanitarian partners to deliver vital services to people in affected communities and to stop the spread of the virus,” said ERC Lowcock.

ENTEBBE, UGANDA - Air Serv has placed an aircraft on standby for first responders to an outbreak of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The country’s health ministry released a statement on May 9th confirming a new outbreak of the virus in the province of Bikoro, located in the northwestern part of the country. Seventeen deaths have already been confirmed.

Saurimo - The eastern Lunda Sul province is intensifying epidemiological actions on border with Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), aimed at preventing Ebola virus from entering Angolan territory.

The information was released Wednesday in by the acting director of the Provincial Health Office in Lunda Sul, Gomes Txipilica.

"In view of human trafficking and trade activity on border zones, we will reinforce our surveillance teams, mainly on Cassai Sul and Chiluange border,” Gomes Txipilica told the journalists.

Kenya is on a high alert following an Ebola outbreak that has killed 17 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In a statement on Wednesday, Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki said the ministry will be conducting routine screening of all travellers at points of entry including at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), and Busia and Malaba along Kenya's border with Uganda.

“In these places, we have installed thermal guns to detect any person with elevated temperatures,” said Ms Kariuki.
