Disaster description

The first case of measles was reported on 6 September 2017 from Kutupalong settlement. Between that date and 18 November 2017, a total of 1,714 suspected cases of measles was reported from FDMN settlements, including two related deaths (CFR 0.12 per cent). The under-5 age group represented 83 per cent of total cases. Between 18 and 25 November 2017, a total of 283,460 children was vaccinated, achieving 63 per cent coverage. The supplementary immunization campaign targeted 349,603 people between the age of six months and 15 years. (WHO, Gov't. of Bangladesh, 26 Nov 2017)

For the Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccination, a total of 475,299 children aged between 6 months and less than 15 years received vaccines during the 15 days of campaign and Mop-Up. This represented around 106 per cent of the intended sector target and more than 149 per cent of UNICEF's target. A cumulative number of 1,724 cases of measles was reported as of 2 December 2017. As of 24 March 2018, a total of 1,034 suspected measles case has been reported since 1 January 2018, through cumulative weekly case reports of syndromic measles. In week 12, there were 50 new case-patients, slightly lower than the previous three weeks. In order to assess whether measles is still circulating, a rapid sampling strategy has been designed to sample approximately 60 patients over a seven-day period, beginning early April 2018. There were 76 new suspected measles cases in weeks 13 and 14, bringing the total for this year up to 1,148 cases as of 9 April 2018. (WHO, 12 Apr 2018)

In week 16, there were 24 new suspected measles cases, compared to 191 cases in week 1 (peak). Number of cases reduced to 53 in week 13, 36 cases in week 14 and 32 cases in week 15. Measles sampling strategy to assess viral transmission was implemented on 15 April 2018. The last sample collection date was 23 April 2018. (WHO, 26 Apr 2018)

In week 19, there were 30 new suspected measles case-patients bringing the total number of cases reported in 2018 to 1,298. (WHO, Gov't of Bangladesh, 12 May 2018)

The trend of Measles-Rubella (MR) has been steadily declining with 48 suspected cases in the past two weeks with no deaths. (UNICEF, 17 Jun 2018)
