Abuja, 4 October, 2019 - In a bid to bolster immunity of eligible children, the Federal Government of Nigeria supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) and other partners immunized over 51 million children during the annual national immunization campaigns.

The intervention, conducted in phases, from 30 July-30 August 2019, reached 51,151,924 eligible children across 36 Nigerian states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Building in-country Capacity for Genetic Sequencing: NCDC National Reference Laboratory

In 2018, Nigeria recorded a large outbreak of Lassa fever. As at the 29th of September 2019, 701 confirmed cases have been reported this year - more than the number of cases recorded in 2018. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) continues to work closely with stakeholders, in improving knowledge on Lassa fever through research activities and epidemiological studies.

  • On 6 September, the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) confirmed an outbreak of yellow fever in Bauchi state (northern Niger) with 243 suspected and 27 confirmed cases, and 34 deaths. Suspected and confirmed cases with an epidemiological link to Bauchi have been reported in four other states (Borno, Kano, Gombe and Katsina).

On 16 July 2019, the Ebonyi State Ministry of Health received information about suspected yellow fever cases in Ndingele ward, Izzi Local Government Area (LGA), Nigeria. The cases had symptoms of fever and jaundice, reported with onset since May 2019. As of 30 August 2019, a total of 84 suspected yellow fever cases, including 26 deaths (case fatality ratio: 31 %), have been reported across nine LGAs within Ebonyi State. Of the suspected yellow fever cases, fifty-five per cent (46/84) are male.

Description of the disaster

On 6 September 2019, the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) confirmed an outbreak of yellow fever in Bauchi state. Out of the four new cases, three were residents of Alkaleri Local Government Area (LGA), and one a tourist from Kano who visited the Yankari game resort. Sporadic YF vaccination has been provided to the Yankari game resort staff and aerial spraying has been done in the game resort surroundings.

Bauchi, 16 September 2019 - In response to an outbreak of Yellow Fever in Bauchi State, Governor Senator Bala Mohammed on 12 September 2019 initiated a vaccination campaign against the disease in Alkaleri Local Government Area (LGA).

“This is yet another milestone in our efforts to deliver effective and efficient healthcare services to the doorsteps of our people,” Governor Mohammed said at the launch ceremony at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Airport.
