OVERVIEW

In the second half of the year, Ethiopia has faced with an unprecedented surge of inter- communal conflict in Gedeo zone (SNNP region) and West Guji zone (Oromia region), which at its height, displaced some 818,000 people.

Highlights

• The Government and partners have taken several measures to enhance response coordination and to boost response capacity at site level. Two Emergency Operation Centres (EOCs) were established in Dilla Town and in Bule Hora Town.

• The response is currently being rapidly scaled-up with diverted resources from life-saving responses to drought, flood and conflict-displacements elsewhere in the country and new resources allocated.

There are four refugee camps under Shire refugee operation in Tigray Regional State located in the Northern part of Ethiopia. In 2017, Standardized Expanded Nutrition Surveys (SENS) were conducted by UNHCR in collaboration with WFP and ARRA from June 19th to 15th July 2017 in Mai aini, Adi_Harush, Shimelba and Hitsats camps.

Executive Summary

Aysaita and Berhale refugee camps are situated in Afar regional state which is located in the north-east part of Ethiopia. In 2017, Standardized Expanded Nutrition Surveys (SENS) were conducted by UNHCR in collaboration with WFP, ARRA and GOAL from 22nd August to 3rd of September 2017 in both camps.

A joint (UNHCR, WFP and ARRA) annual standardised expanded nutrition survey (SENS) was conducted at Kebribeyah, Awbarre and Sheder camps from 11 to 23 Dec 2017. The three refugee camps are situated in Ethiopia Somali regional state in the Eastern part of Ethiopia.
Jijiga is the capital town of Ethiopia-Somali regional state, eastern part of Ethiopia, which is 635 km from the capital city of Addis Ababa.

SUMMARY

Southern and eastern Ethiopia continue to battle the impact of the Indian Ocean Dipole-induced drought, exacerbated by disease outbreaks, large scale loss of livelihood assets and displacement. The humanitarian situation countrywide has been further compounded by below average spring rains – the third consecutive poor/failed rains in the southern drought belt.
