17 October, 2017, Damascus, Syria – A WHO shipment of health supplies delivered through the Syrian Arab Red Crescent to besieged Deir-Ez-Zor governorate in Syria has helped struggling health facilities deliver life-saving health services to thousands of people.

The 14–ton shipment includes medicines for trauma care, treatment of burns, antibiotics; anti-allergens; cardiovascular medicines; and oral rehydration salts. In total, the supplies are sufficient for almost 1800 trauma cases and 260,000 medical treatments.

13 OCTOBER 2017 | GENEVA - The World Health Organization has received reports of an attack on medical facilities in eastern Syrian Arab Republic that has destroyed the only vaccines cold room in al-Mayadeen district, Deir Ezzor Governorate.

More than 100,000 doses of measles vaccines and 35,000 doses of polio vaccines were stored in these facilities, alongside equipment, syringes, and stocks for all vaccine-preventable childhood diseases.

AMMAN/DAMASCUS, 12 October, 2017 – UNICEF has received reports that ongoing violence in Deir ez-Zor in eastern Syria has destroyed a UNICEF-supported vaccine cold room in al-Mayadin district, with at least 140,000 doses of vaccines lost, including some planned for the ongoing vaccination drive in the area. UNICEF is currently verifying this alarming report.

Isolates from some cases had been laboratory pending for some time. The most recent case, a child from Boukamal with no history of polio vaccination, had onset of paralysis on 5 August.

  • The total number of cVDPV2 cases is 47.

No new wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) cases were reported in the past week. The total number of WPV1 cases for 2017 remains six. The most recent case in the country had onset of paralysis on 10 July, from Zabul province, neighbouring Kandahar province and Pakistan.
