The seven-year long conflict in Syria continues to have a devastating impact on every child across the country. More than 13.1 million people, including 5.3 million children, need urgent life-saving humanitarian assistance in 2018. An estimated 5.6 million people are in acute need due to a convergence of vulnerabilities resulting from displacement, exposure to hostilities, and limited access to basic goods and services.

In January, children in Raqqa city received polio vaccines for the first time in two years as families return to the devastated city.

From the front passenger seat of a small utility truck, Mahmoud Al-Sabr hangs out the window, looking for families and any child under five years old to be vaccinated against polio. As the car he travels in dodges rubble and remnants of buildings that once stood tall in Raqqa city, he flicks the ‘on’ switch for his megaphone.

  • No new cases of cVDPV2 have been reported in 2018. The most recent case (by date of onset of paralysis) is 21 September 2017 from Boukamal district, Deir Ez - Zor governorate. The total number of cVDPV2 cases remains 74.

  • An independent outbreak response Review of the cVDPV2 outbreak in Syria is taking place this week. The review will look at the current epidemiological situation, the quality of immunization and surveillance response as well as the overall progress towards stopping the cVDPV2 transmission.

  • 6-8 April, renewed and intensive violence was reported in Duma city resulting in many civilian deaths and injuries.
    Reports include sustained airstrikes and shelling on Duma, the killing of civilians, the destruction of civilian infrastructure, and attacks against several health facilities. There has also been shelling on Damascus city, reportedly causing the death of civilians.
