  • New on www.polioeradication.org: Planning an effective vaccination campaign; and, reaching the hard-to-reach: overcoming physical obstacles.

  • Pakistan and Afghanistan polio eradication teams convened last week in Islamabad to follow up on the southern corridor (Quetta Block – Greater Kandahar) joint planning for the upcoming low transmission season. The meeting was attended by the national teams as well as the staff from the southern region of Afghanistan and Balochistan province of Pakistan.

Humanitarian Needs

Humanitarian needs remain staggering in terms of scale, severity and complexity indicating little overall improvement in the humanitarian situation in Syria. Against the continued backdrop of high levels of violence and systemic violations of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and International Human Rights Law (IHRL), no amount of humanitarian assistance and protection services can substitute for a political solution.

Water and electricity has been reportedly cut-off for more than a month. People are forced to collect unsafe water, exposing them to the risk of waterborne diseases. Unexploded ordnances and landmines continues to be a serious safety concern.

DAMASCUS, 18 August 2017 – UNICEF, the World Health Organisation and partners have completed the first round of a vaccination campaign in response to the recent outbreak of vaccine-derived polio in Syria. The campaign provided vital protection against the disease to more than 355,000 children under five years old in the Governorates of Deir Ez Zor and Raqqa, where violence has made access especially difficult.
