8 January, 2019 - The Ministry of Public Health and Population of Yemen has reported 11 735 suspected cholera cases, with 25 associated deaths, during epidemiological week 50 (10 – 16 December) in 2018. 10% were severe cases. The cumulative total number of suspected cholera cases from 1 January 2018 to 16 December 2018 is 348 286, with 466 associated deaths (CFR 0.13%). Children under five years of age represent 32.0% of the total suspected cases. 22 of 23 governorates and 312 of 333 districts in Yemen have been affected by the outbreak.

In April 2018, UN Secretary-General António Guterres referred to Yemen as “the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.”

Three and a half years of conflict in Yemen have led to the near total collapse of the country’s health system. More than half of health facilities are no longer functional and 16.4 million people do not have access to adequate health services.

Twenty-two million people require humanitarian assistance and 14 million people are on the brink of starvation.

One health framework in Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR)

On 12th December 2018, an expert meeting on one health framework for action on emerging zoonotic infections was held in Amman, Jordan. The meeting, organized by the World Health Organization Regional Office for Eastern Mediterranean (WHO EMRO), reviewed the framework in the light of improving efficient and coordinated multisectoral “one health” approach among human health, animal and environment sectors to prevent, detect and respond to emerging zoonotic infection.

The cumulative total number of suspected cholera cases from 1 January 2018 to 9 December 2018 is 336 551 including 441 associated deaths (CFR 0.13%). Children under five represent 32.0% of the total suspected cases, and 22 out of 23 governorates and 312 out of 333 districts in Yemen have been affected.

A total of 10 outbreaks were reported in the countries of WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) during January to December 2018. Some of these outbreaks have reported in the previous year and not been contained.

27 December 2018 ─ Al Sabeen Hospital in Sana’a has admitted many cholera patients over the last 2 years, including infants as young as 2 months. Many of them also suffer from acute malnutrition. At the peak of the cholera outbreak more than 150 patients a day were being admitted to Al Sabeen hospital with severe watery diarrhoea. Some 20% of the total were diagnosed with cholera.

Two-and-a-half-year-old Ramez and eight-month-old Mohamed are brothers. Small and frail, they have been diagnosed with cholera and are moderately malnourished.

Highlights

  • According to the latest IPC analysis about 5 million people are in IPC Phase 4 (Emergency) and about 10.6 million people are in IPC Phase 3 (Crisis) constituting about half of the population in Yemen (additional info below).

  • In support of a nationwide polio campaign implemented by the Ministry of Public Health and Population, UNICEF and WHO helped reach more than 3.8 children under five years with immunization. The campaign is part of larger efforts to keep Yemen a polio-free country.

Hepatitis A outbreak in Northern Aleppo

The Ministry of Health of Syria has reported a cluster of acute jaundice syndrome cases in the northwest area of Aleppo. Laboratory tests performed in WHO’s reference laboratory at American University of Beirut identified hepatitis A virus (HAV) as the causative organism of these acute jaundice cases.

SHARJAH, 20th December, 2018 (WAM) -- The Big Heart Foundation, TBHF, the UAE-based global humanitarian organisation, has renewed its support with a financial grant of over US$700,000 to three projects undertaken by leading UN agencies, UNHCR and UNICEF, in Jordan, Syria and Yemen.

According to the 2018 Humanitarian Needs Overview Report, HNO, 13.1 million people in Syria alone are in need of humanitarian assistance, out of which the condition of nearly half the population is acute.

Multidrug-resistant typhoid fever in Pakistan

Since November 2016, there has been an increase in the number of cases of multidrug-resistant Salmonella Typhoid (MDR S. Typhi) fever in Pakistan. Up to epiweek 48 of 2018 a total of 5,174 cases of MDR S. Typhi have been reported from different districts of Sindh province (please see table) in Pakistan.
