Switzerland - IOM is preparing an urgent appeal to donors in response to a migration/refugee emergency unfolding in Yemen and Djibouti, impacting across the Horn of Africa region, including Ethiopia. On October 6, 11 cases of Cholera were confirmed positive in one neighbourhood of the capital Sana’a. No confirmed cases have been reported in other locations in Yemen. UNICEF, together with WHO and Health authorities, have initiated a rapid response setting up a treatment centre as well as dispatching an investigation team to the affected neighbourhood. The source of infection was identified as water and commercial food contamination.

Sana'a, 7 October 2016— Yemen’s Ministry of Public Health and Population has officially announced the occurrence of 8 cholera cases among population in one of the areas of Sana'a city. The stool samples of these cases were tested positive for Vibrio cholerae. The cases were admitted to Al-Sabeen Hospital in Sana'a in the first week of October and are currently receiving treatment for acute dehydration in an isolated section of the hospital.

SANA’A, 7 October 2016 - Health authorities in Yemen confirmed a cholera outbreak on Thursday, 6 October, posing an increased health risk to the population-especially children-given the crumbling health system in the country.

“This outbreak adds to the misery of millions of children in Yemen. We are supporting health centres to prevent and treat cholera cases and will continue working with partners to scale up the response and stem out this dangerous disease”, said UNICEF Representative in Yemen, Julien Harneis.
