Speaking in Geneva, spokesperson Dr. Margaret Harris noted that measles has already killed more people this year than the Ebola outbreak, which began last August.

According to WHO, more than 2,000 people have died from measles in 2019, while the Ebola outbreak which began last August in Ituri and Nord Kivu provinces has claimed 1,705 lives.

Highlights:

DR Congo: The cholera outbreaks are still concentrated in North Kivu (124) and South Kivu (156).

Cameroon: An outbreak of cholera is currently raging in the region of North and Far North. During the week 27, twenty-three (23) new cases were recorded in the health districts of Kaele (9), Garoua 1 (6), Garoua 2 (4), Figuil (3) and Pitoa (1).

Nigeria: Cholera cases are concentrated in Adamawa (40) and Katsina (24) states. In the state of Adamawa, the health districts of Girei (15), Yola Nord (7) and Yola Sud (18) are the most affected.

Highlights

• During the month of May 2019, 8,795 school aged boys and girls (5 to 17 years) affected by crisis received learning materials

• In May 2019, a total of 83,896 persons benefited from a WASH package delivered by UNICEF partners, of which 23,544 people affected by ongoing conflicts, 60,117 persons affected or at risk of cholera epidemics

• In May 2019, a total of 11,105 children (5,174 girls, or 47%) affected by conflict received a child protection assistance

MBUJI-MAYI / GENEVA, 3 JULY 2019 -- Phase 2 of the biggest ever oral vaccination campaign against cholera is scheduled to take place from 3-8 July 2019 in 15 health districts in the four central provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) - Kasaï, Kasaï Oriental, Lomami et Sankuru. The second dose of vaccine confers lasting immunity against cholera, and is being targeted at 1 235 972 people over 1 year of age.
