Inside Syria UNICEF is scaling up Whole of Syria operations to respond to the recent escalation of conict and displacement, with the response from all three operational hubs. In Aleppo, operations include water trucking to 4,000 people in Haramein camp and Azaz city, and health and nutrition supplies were pre-positioned in eastern Aleppo city. In Dara city UNICEF has provided emergency health kits for 35,000 people in 6 clinics and hygiene kits for 45,000 people.

Inside Syria UNICEF has supported 7.9 million people to access to safe drinking water and improved sanitation services, of these people 2.6 million resided in hard to reach locations. In response to winter, increasing fuel prices and poorly insulated IDP shelters, UNICEF has so far reached 401,000 children with winter kits, blankets and school heating supplies. Of children reached with winter and summer materials in 2015 113,000 live in hard to reach areas.

In Syria, as part of the Back to Learning Campaign, UNICEF distributed essential learning supplies including schoolbags, textbooks and stationary to 428,315 children, including 5,732 textbooks to children living in a besieged area of Deir-Ez-Zour city. So far this year, UNICEF has distributed learning supplies to 578,000 children.

In Turkey, with our government partner, UNICEF has increased the number of Syrian volunteer teachers receiving monthly incentives to 7,629 – more than doubling the sector target for 2015 and improving the quality of education for Syrian children.

During the month of September the Syrian conict entered a new phase, with Russian air strikes across the country allegedly targeting terrorists groups in Idleb, Hama, Homs, Aleppo, Raqqa and Deir-Ez-Zour. The airstrikes, and the increased intensity of related clashes, continue to have a negative impact on humanitarian access and delivery of humanitarian assistance.

In response to persisting severe water shortages in Aleppo, UNICEF continued to truck 10,000 m3 of water per day, reaching 700,000 people, while continuing to develop alternative water supply modalities.

In Syria, accessing children and their families in hard to reach locations remains a signicant challenge due to heavy restrictions, denial of access and the danger of operating in active conict zones. UNICEF deliveries have managed to reach approximately 8% of the 422,000 people living in besieged locations and 26 percent (1.1 million people) of 4.2 million people in need in hard to reach areas.

Highlights

  • In the weeks following the reporting period, the Syria crisis has literally reached the shores of Europe. The majority of refugee families seeking asylum in Europe in the last months are from Syria. These families have made the difficult decision to take extreme action putting their lives at risk to reach safe haven. The refugee crisis in Europe will only worsen if greater efforts are not made to end the protracted conflict in Syria and address the humanitarian and longer term needs of the millions affected by the violence.

In April UNICEF participated in inter-agency cross-line convoys in Syria which provided humanitarian assistance to hard-to-reach locations delivering health, nutrition, WASH and education supplies to an estimated 125,575 beneciaries. UNICEF also provided cross-border supplies in Syria to hospitals in the form of essential drugs, water and sanitation supplies to treat water and allow families to store it safely at home, and to community groups that provide safe spaces for children.

NEW YORK, 12 June 2015 – Millions of Syrian children will benefit from the generous US$45 million donation made by the Government of Kuwait, UNICEF said today. This brings Kuwait’s total donations to UNICEF in just three years to US$134.5 million to support the humanitarian response for Syrian children.

“After more than four years of conflict, the humanitarian situation in Syria and across the region has grown more desperate – especially for the 5.6 million affected children living inside the country,” said UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Yoka Brandt.
