Benin: Cholera Epidemic - Oct 2012
On 23 Oct 2012, the municipality of Comé (Department of Mono) in the south west of Benin reported the first confirmed cases of cholera. Shortly after, the local authorities issued an official declaration of the outbreak. A total of 65 cases were reported throughout November 2012. Through the joint efforts by the Beninese government, local authorities and the Red Cross Society of Benin the epidemic was contained and was declared to be over in December 2012. (IFRC, 13 Feb 2013)

Summary: CHF 112,195 was allocated from the IFRC`s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) on 9 November 2012, to support the National Society in delivering immediate assistance to some 25,000 people in 5,000 households.
Both Guatemala and Myanmar were affected by earthquakes during the reporting period. On 7 November, an earthquake of 7.2 magnitude struck the pacific coast of Guatemala, affecting more than 600,000 people followed by a second quake of 6.2 magnitude on 11 November. There were no immediate reports of major infrastructural damage caused by the second earthquake. The 6.8 magnitude earthquake which struck in Myanmar on 10 November, meanwhile, damaged infrastructure but the full extent of the impact remains unclear.
Summary: Since 23 October 2012, the municipality of Comé in the department of Mono in the southwest part of Benin has experienced a cholera epidemic; currently counting 49 confirmed cases, 3 of which were reported in the neighbouring municipality of Houéyogbé.
Le gouvernement belge vient de répondre favorablement à une sollicitation de la Croix-Rouge de Belgique et a alloué 53.000€ pour aider la Croix-Rouge du Bénin à apporter une aide d’urgence à plus de 10.000 personnes touchées par de dramatiques inondations et qui ont tout perdu dans le désastre.
Le Fonds de Secours d’Urgence aux Catastrophes (Dref : Disaster Relief Emergency Fund) de la fédération internationale de la Croix-Rouge et du Croissant-Rouge, a au total alloué 206.000€ pour cette opération d’urgence.
