More than 100 cases of cholera were registered during the first fortnight of December, in the district of Lucapa, north-eastern Lunda Norte province, claiming various lives (Government, 23 Dec 2011).

In this issue, a general overview of outbreaks that occurred within the WHO African Region in January 2012 is provided as well as a sum-mary of ongoing outbreaks as reported by Member States.
Overview of reported outbreaks in WHO African Region
Based on data received from the Early Warning System through the Event Management System, 11 public health events were reported to the Regional Office covering the period 01 January - 02 February 2012. The distribution of these events by country is given in Figure 1 and 2 below.

Dundo - Lucapa Municipality, in the eastern Lunda-Norte Province, which has been facing a cholera outbreak, did not record any case over the last 48 hours, an official source has announced.
This was said by the Home Affairs deputy minister for civil protection, Eugénio Laborinho.
Since December 2011, Lucapa village records a cholera outbreak that has already claimed over 50 lives.
Dundo – Over a hundred cases of cholera were recorded in the first fortnight of December, in Lucapa Municipality, north-eastern Lunda-Norte Province, informed last Friday in Dundo locality governor Ernesto Muangala, at a yearend greetings ceremony.
The governor stated that the situation worried the executive, reason why it has to take extra preventive measures to stop the spread of the disease.
Dundo - More than 100 cases of cholera were registered during the first fortnight of December, in the district of Lucapa, north-eastern Lunda Norte province, the local governor, Ernesto Muangala, informed on Friday in the city of Dundo during the year's end greetings ceremony.
The official asserted that the situation is of great concern to the government, which should take the necessary preventive measures and, therefore, every effort is being made to curb the disease.
He explained that the outbreak has already claimed various lives in a period of 15 days.
Le choléra s’est déclaré à Lucapa, province de Lunda à la frontière entre l’Angola et la province congolaise du Kasaï-Occidental. Selon l’agence angolaise de presse, cette épidémie a fait douze morts et au moins trente personnes atteintes.
D’après la même source, au moins quatre cas sont enregistrés quotidiennement depuis une dizaine de jours, dans cette ville située à moins de 200 km de la frontière avec les territoires de Luiza et de Tshikapa, et avec le Katanga en RDC.
