h Between August 2009 and December 2010, the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that more than 325,000 individuals, or 94 percent of conflict-affected internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Sri Lanka, have returned to their areas of origin in Northern Province.

h Torrential rains on November 10 and 11 caused heavy flooding in Colombo, Kalutara, Gampaha, and Matara districts in southwest Sri Lanka, displacing nearly 20,600 people and damaging or destroying more than 300 houses, according to OCHA.

Jaffna District:

- On 6 January, Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Resettlement, Development and Security in the Northern Province (PTF) and Senior Presidential Advisor Basil Rajapaksa visited Jaffna District to officially release a 300m portion of the Palaly High Security Zone (HSZ) buffer zone for resettlement. Mr. Rajapaksa was accompanied by Minister for Social Services and Social Welfare Douglas Devananda, Governor of the Northern Province Maj. Gen. G. A.

There are 264,822 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) (85,768 families) housed in 20 sites in Vavunia district from January 2009. Thirteen sites are located in Cheddikulam MOH area while the rest are in Vavnunia MOH area. In Cheddikulam area, there are 6 zones (zone 0-5) where 87% of the IDPs (227,325) have been settles. Disease surveillance activities of these zones are coordinated by the Health Coordination Centre Cheddikulam. Relevant Medical Officers of Health are responsible for disease surveillance activities of other small camps in Cheddikulam and Vavunia MOH areas.
