Cook Islands: Dengue Outbreak - May 2009
On 20 May 2009, the Cook Islands experienced a serious dengue outbreak, with over 900 cases reported on the main island of Rarotonga . That number reached 1214 by 18 Jun. The IFRC, government and non-government agencies coordinated a response to the threat by increasing awareness-raising in identified communities, procuring and distributing vector control kits to affected communities, and disseminating information, education and communication materials to the public. Programme purpose: To increase the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) capacity to assist national Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to reduce the number of deaths, injuries and impact from disasters through the provision of timely and adequate financial support for disaster response from the DREF.

Programme purpose: To increase the capacity of the International Federation to assist National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to reduce the number of deaths, injuries and impact from disasters through the provision of timely and adequate financial support for disaster response from the Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF).
During the first six months of the year, the DREF allocated a total of CHF 7,484,779 in 49 different allocations to 32 Red Cross Red Crescent National Societies.
