Heavy rainfall causes flooding in eastern Uganda and northwestern Kenya

  1. A delayed onset to the March-May rainfall season coupled with high temperatures has caused dryness in parts of Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, and Uganda.

  2. Below-average rainfall over the past two months have led to early-season deficits and abnormal dryness in Nigeria.

  3. Heavy rainfall during the past weeks has caused flooding in eastern Uganda. Continued rainfall next week is likely to maintain high flooding risk.

NACIONES UNIDAS, 12 jun 2019 (IPS) - Las poblaciones rurales e indígenas en países como El Salvador, Guatemala y Honduras están cada vez más en movimiento, ya sea desplazándose internamente o migrando hacia otros países.

Pero el foco mediático no se pone sobre estas poblaciones, que permanecen olvidadas, mientras los embates del cambio climático les fuerzan a abandonar sus lugares de origen, lo que se suma a otras causas expulsoras tradicionales en los espacios rurales centroamericanos.

  • Haiti is facing a sharp deterioration of the political and socio-economic situation. A large demonstration was organised by the political opposition on 9 June, calling for the President's resignation, which gathered several thousand Haitians in Port-au-Prince and other major cities. The demonstration turned violent with roadblocks and looting reported. Three deaths have been linked to the demonstrations, cars were burned and buildings damaged. On 10 June, commercial activities had been limited and schools remained closed.
