SITUATION UPDATE

  • During the first half of September 2018, around 120,000 people were newly displaced from rural areas of Badghis to Qala-e-Naw due to on-going drought. The number of people displaced due to the drought is currently more than 250,000 in the Western Region.

  • Internal displacement: From 1 January to the end of August 2018, 223,169 individuals fled their homes due to conflict. 32 out of 34 provinces had recorded some level of forced displacement, while another 32 provinces are hosting IDPs. 56% IDPs are children, facing additional risks due to the flight and plight of the displacement, including child recruitment, child labour and increased GBV risks. According to OCHA, 18% IDPs are displaced in hard to reach areas.

  • During the reporting period, UNICEF provided access to safe drinking water to 141,132 people (91 per cent of target). The 2017/2018 winter period was the fifth consecutive year wherein the main planting season for wheat (October-February) has been compromised due to drought. In 2018, more than two thirds of the country – some 20 provinces – are affected by severe rain deficit and limited snowfall in winter season, negatively affecting water availability and impacting both rain fed and irrigated agricultural lands, and pastures. Due to the drought, nearly 50,000 people from affected provinces have been displaced to Herat and Qalai Naw.

After four decades of conflict and insecurity, and with elections to be held in the coming months against a backdrop of growing humanitarian need, Afghanistan needs more support than ever to tackle its challenges, said the United Nations humanitarian and refugee chiefs on Monday after a joint two-day visit in the country.

The United Nations humanitarian affairs chief, Mark Lowcock, and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, were speaking to the press in Geneva, ahead of a major international conference on Afghanistan due to be held in November.

(Kabul, 6 September 2018): At the end of a two-day joint visit to Afghanistan, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, and the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Mark Lowcock, called on donors to urgently increase and sustain support for the humanitarian response.
