Summary:

The regional appeal, throughout its first year, has supported 15 emergency operations, including ten Appeals and five DREFs. The latter were/are aiming at meeting the needs of approximately two million

people in 14 countries, including five countries of focus: Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Somalia and South-Sudan. For this 12-month report, these operations were asked to provide a brief overview of their key achievements, successes, challenges and key lessons learned over the past year.

Further to the last situation update , Somalia continues to be one of the worst-affected countries, as forecast by the Famine Early Warning Systems (FEWS) Network and the International Red Cross, famine is likely to be declared in late 2017 in the state of Puntland, Somaliland and South West, Somalia.

Situation Update

The recent food crisis in Africa has deteriorated during the past few months. As of to-date, an estimated 35 million people are in need of urgent food assistance in 11 African countries which includes the worst affected Somalia, Nigeria, South Sudan and Ethiopia. Other countries facing serious situation are Kenya, Cameroon, while Malawi, Namibia, Niger, Zimbabwe and Chad are also among the affected.

We are on the brink of a humanitarian mega-crisis unprecedented in recent history. The spectre of famine looms large over parts of Africa and the Middle East.

We must act now. What is needed is a broad and massive scaling up of support from the international community. If we treat this as "business as usual", the long-term cost in human lives will only rise.

The consequences of not dedicating the resources to avert these disasters and address their root causes could affect us all.

Prolonged and worsening drought conditions across Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya means that more than 11 million people are facing severe hunger and are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is calling for an immediate and expansive response in order to prevent widespread drought conditions from triggering a humanitarian catastrophe.

Shipment to Somaliland, Puntland & Ethiopia from Turkey, consisting of; 6,000 tons of flour and 5,000 tons of sugar totalling 11,000 tons of food relief by sea-way, delivered 2,500 tons of flour and sugar to Ethiopia (via Djibouti), 5,000 tons of flour and sugar to Somaliland (from Berbera Port), and 3,500 tons of flour and sugar to Puntland (Bosaso Port) on 8.10.2016. In addition, a donation of 178,844 units of baby diapers made to the Turkish Red Crescents Directorate of Istanbul was loaded on the aforementioned vessel and delivered to the given countries.
