Highlights of a new FAO report

- As the year draws to a close, FAO's latest estimates confirm that a new record high level of global cereal production was achieved in 2008, sufficient to cover the expected increase in utilization in 2008/09 and also allow for a moderate replenishment of world reserves.

- Most of the increase in production this year has been among the developed countries, with that in the developing countries rising just marginally.

15 May 2003 description

Iran plans to complete 35 new dams throughout the country that would conserve some 25 billion cubic meters of water annually, "Iran Daily" reported on 14 May. Twelve of the dams would be in border regions and would curb excessive water flows to neighboring countries, according to Deputy Energy Minister for Water Affairs Reza Ardakanian. In addition, feasibility studies are under way for 61 additional dams. Ardakanian indicated that talks are continuing with Kuwait regarding possible water sales to that country. SF

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on the morning of 2 March visited the Hirmand River, the Chahnimeh Reservoir, the Zehak Dam, and irrigation networks in the Kahak border area in the northeastern part of Sistan va Baluchistan Province, IRNA reported. Accompanying officials briefed Khamenei on steps being taken to alleviate the region's water shortage, and the supreme leader said more must be done to increase the supply of water for irrigation. Later in the day Khamenei gave a speech in Zabol in which he urged Afghanistan to fulfill its commitments on supplying water.

Isfahan Province official Mansur Shisheh-Forush said that rains from this and last year have not compensated for the drought of previous years in Isfahan, "Jomhuri-yi Islami" reported on 20 January. Water behind the Zayandeh Rud Dam is 45 percent lower than normal, he said.

KANDAHAR (NNI): Afghan Minister for Housing and Urban Reconstruction, Youssef Pashtun, has said his government had approved the restoration in the flow of Hirmand river for 60 days to Iran and was surprised by the sudden disruption after a recent short flow.

Afghanistan has halted the flow of the Hirmand (Helmand) River into Iran, according to a 6 November report in "Iran," the official Islamic Republic News Agency daily. The river's water resumed flowing to Iran on 25 October, but even then there were official complaints about inadequate supplies (see "RFE/RL Iran Report," 4 November 2002). "Iran," as cited by IRNA, reported that Kabul agreed to release 1,000 hours of water flow, but turned off the tap after just 240 hours.
