Georgian grain production for 2001/02 rebounded with vigor from the previous season's drought, with output reaching 0.7 million tons (including 0.3 million tons of wheat), against 0.4 million in 2000/01. Early prospects are favorable for 2002/03 winter grains, with adequate winter precipitation recharging soil-moisture reserves.

20 Feb 2002 description

Western Georgia was badly affected by a second consecutive drought in 2001. On the basis of two joint assessments undertaken in the region by the UN and the Georgian Ministry of Agriculture, the European Commission has decided to allocate €700,000 to alleviate the negative impact of the drought on vulnerable farming households in Western Georgia. The funds made available will be channelled through the Humanitarian Aid Office, ECHO which comes under the responsibility of Commissioner Poul Nielson.

Background
In summer 2001, the drought conditions destroyed most of the maize crop in Imereti and adjoining districts of the Guria, Samegrelo, and Racha-Lechkhumi regions. The 2000 maize crop in Imereti was only 60% of the baseline production of 1998-99, whereas the maize harvest in 2001 was a disastrous 17% of this baseline. In the districts of Tsageri and Oni (Racha-Lechkhumi), 2001 was the second year of drought, just as in Imereti. Production was less than 50% of normal in both years. In Guria and Samegrelo many areas experienced over 69% crop losses in 2001.

Grain production has nearly doubled in 2001 at 719 000 tonnes compared with the drought reduced harvest of the preceding year. This year's harvest includes 306 000 tonnes of wheat, 350 000 tonnes of maize and 50 000 tonnes of barley. Drought in the western parts of the country severely compromised spring crop production and many drought-affected farmers are in need of emergency assistance.

10 Sep 2001 description

Cereal production has significantly recovered from the severely drought affected crop in 2000, owing mainly to favourable weather conditions and the availability of farm inputs, the latter predominantly through international assistance. FAO tentatively estimates grain output at 613 000 tonnes (2000: 391 000 tonnes), including 200 000 tonnes of wheat, 350 000 tonnes of maize and 50 000 tonnes of barley. However, drought in the west this summer has resulted in partial or complete loss of maize and vegetables in some areas.
